The eloquence of only a few resolute lines…
Her love for music is of vital importance for her expressive work. Lutgard Wittocx lives with music. We can recognize that in her designs as well as in her images. In the latter it is obvious: numerous cellists, pianists and violists, pass before the eye of the spectator. In the facial expression and the hands the artist captures the abandonment with which the musicians play their instruments. However, it is the design that gets the shiver of the music across to the spectator. The musician’s activity becomes alive because of the expressiveness so typical for Wittocx. The drawing-like character of her work manifests momentum. It is the eloquence of only a few resolute lines. In the many portraits Wittocx made, we observe a strong rhythm, which plays an important part in her “musician-series” as well. The works of art, divided in areas, mostly consist of grey and white with a touch of blue and red. Despite the fact that these accents seem to demand your attention, we still experience the whole painting. The eyes of the spectator are not allowed to rest because the artist sees to it that the whole of the lines and areas are a dynamic entity. The spectator is shown every part of the canvas, on which he can observe the expression of the models surrendering themselves to their own emotions. Lutgard Wittocx evolves in a penetrating way a transient but overwhelming reflection of human existence.
